The Winning Side: The Case for Goldwater Republicanism by Ralph de Toledano. New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons, [1963]. Hardcover with dust jacket.
Ralph de Toledano's case for why conservatism could win in 1964, written while Barry Goldwater's candidacy was building. De Toledano, a journalist, National Review editor, and author of Seeds of Treason (the Alger Hiss case, with Victor Lasky), argues that the Republican Party's moderates had it backward, and that a conservative candidate, not another establishment compromise, offered the party its best chance against John F. Kennedy. The jacket carries endorsements from Senator John G. Tower and William F. Buckley Jr. Buckley's blurb singles out the book's thesis that conservatism is good politics. It's a campaign-era document that captures the argument behind the Draft Goldwater movement, and a good companion to The Conscience of a Conservative.
