The Conscience of a Conservative Barry Goldwater

The Conscience of a Conservative by Barry Goldwater. Hillman Books paperback, New York, 1960.

Goldwater's short manifesto, originally issued in hardcover by Victor Publishing Company of Shepherdsville, Kentucky, earlier in 1960. It argued for limited government, states' rights, and a firm stance against Soviet communism, and it turned an Arizona senator into the leading voice of the conservative movement. L. Brent Bozell Jr. ghostwrote the text. The Hillman mass-market paperback put it in front of far more readers than the small hardcover run could reach, and it helped build the groundwork for Goldwater's 1964 presidential run.
