Abrams, the Democratic nominee in the 2018 Georgia gubernatorial election, made history as the first African-American female major-party gubernatorial nominee in the United States. However, she narrowly lost to Republican candidate Brian Kemp by a margin of 1.4%. In February 2019, Abrams achieved another milestone by becoming the first African-American woman to deliver a response to the State of the Union address. Despite her efforts, she lost the 2022 Georgia gubernatorial election to Kemp once again, this time by a significantly larger margin of 7.5%.
